How can CO₂ emissions from vehicle engines be measured scientifically and fuel consumption in combustion engines be reduced? 

These questions are being addressed by the Chair of Combustion Engineering and Drive Technology, which this week provided insights into its laboratories and presented current research projects. The occasion was a visit by an international delegation from transport ministries and authorities in Colombia, Kenya, Morocco, Thailand, and Vietnam, who are participating in this year's Transport and Climate Change Week organized by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) in Berlin. After a presentation on Dresden as a research hub, a tour of the professorship's own test facilities provided an opportunity to learn about technologies and methods for measuring vehicle emissions. In a subsequent technical presentation, Prof. Frank Atzler spoke about pollutant formation in engines, exhaust gas aftertreatment methods, legislation, and methods and devices for measuring pollutants.

Background: As part of the IMPROVE project, GIZ is working with five countries (Colombia, Kenya, Morocco, Thailand, and Vietnam) to develop vehicle regulations, particularly in the areas of CO₂ emissions data collection and fuel consumption standardization.

The international Transport and Climate Change Week is taking place until September 26.
